Funding of more than €1 million is to be given to 191 projects in Cork to enhance school library facilities, parent rooms and small scale equipment grants for youth groups.

A total of 166 projects in Cork city and county will benefit from a share in funding of €227,450 for equipment grants for youth clubs and groups, 14 projects in Cork will benefit from a funding totalling €369,862 for parent room projects, a further Cork project will receive €110,000 for a combined parent room and library project and 10 schools will share €308,919 for library projects.

The funding is part of an €8 million package aimed at supporting youth groups and schools in disadvantaged areas which was announced by the Minister Education and Science, Batt O'Keeffe, TD ,the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív, TD, and the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Barry Andrews, TD yesterday (Wednesday, June 18).

Outlining details of the funding, Minister O'Keeffe said "this funding will enable schools, participating in the DEIS programme, schools in or serving RAPID areas, to enhance school library facilities and parent rooms. Funding is also being provided for equipment grants for disadvantaged youth clubs and groups. The Department of Education and Science will be writing to the schools and the VECs involved in the next few days informing them of their grant-aid approval.

"This Government will continue to prioritise and target resources at schools who are working to counteract educational disadvantage. This year overall expenditure on measures to tackle disadvantage at all levels will amount to just over €800million – an increase of approximately €70 million on the €730million spent last year."
