An Bord Pleanala have given the go-ahead for a new €85 million commercial and residential development in Carrigtwohill, Cork. Castlelake, a joint venture between Dutch construction company Ascon and Irish property developer Gable Holdings, was given the approval at the second time of asking, having been initially refused permission by Cork City Council. The new development will comprise of five buildings, including a five-storey 120-bedroom hotel with bar, restaurant and function rooms as well as offices with a combined floor area of 112,000 sq ft. In addition to this 56,600 sq ft of retail space will also be provided, including a 21,900 sq ft anchor supermarket, and 88 apartments, which will be built on the upper floors of each of the five buildings. Negotiations are said to be underway between a hotel operator and the construction company, with those behind the venture confident that work could begin by the middle of next year, depending on market conditions. Cork County Council had refused permission for the project because of its concerns that it would be premature until the road network in the area was improved. However Bord Pleanala approved the project, subject to conditions which would help address the traffic concerns. The 3.32 hectare site at Castlelake is on the Cork City side of Carrigtwohill and is 16kms east of the city. |
