Members of Cork City Council will be asked to suspend standing orders at the next full meeting of the council on Monday evening in order to discuss the future of the Cork to Swansea ferry service.

The move to suspend standing orders will be made by Fine Gael councillor Patricia Gosch who says the issue is now one of great urgency and must be resolved before Christmas if a service is to be in place for the critical month of January.

Cllr Gosch said, “This should be at the very top of the council’s agenda. Time is running out and not having a service in place by January will spell financial disaster for the region. It has been estimated that the loss of the service this year has cost the region up to €35 million in lost revenue. If any councillor can tell me of a more urgent issue that needs to be tackled this week I’d like to hear it”.

Cllr Gosch said that the issue now needed to be debated fully at council and that the City Council needs to take a proactive approach in securing a ferry service between Cork and the UK for 2008.

She added, “January is critical for booking for the summer season so we need to get this service in place by then. If Council doesn’t accept that standing orders need to be suspended they will be failing the city, the county and the region. We must tackle this issue now.”
