Almost 13,000 students in Cork commenced the state examinations yesterday morning (Wednesday, May 3.)
A total of 6,027 leaving certificate students sat English Paper One at exam centres across the city and county yesterday and will this morning sit English Paper Two, with a number of students also sitting the Chemistry paper this afternoon. The group, which is made up of 3,169 women and 2,858 men will sit exams in a range of core and diverse optional subjects over the coming weeks including Japanese, Russian and Applied Math.
Aisling said that English Paper One had proved to be very accessible to all students because it looked at themes of identity and what it is like to be a teenager. She added that while there was no way of knowing what would come up in the papers over the coming days everyone had already put in the hard work and now they would just have to do their best. A total of 343 leaving certificate applied students in Cork also began their final exams yesterday morning and today many will take exams in Irish, French, German, Spanish and sign language. A further 6, 457 students in Cork commenced their junior certificate examinations this week with 3,174 women and 3,288 men taking their English examinations yesterday morning. These students will sit Maths Paper One and Irish Paper One this morning. Nationally, 53,345 candidates are entered for the Leaving Certificate examination, 3,475 candidates for the final year examinations in the Leaving Certificate Applied and 57,006 candidates for the Junior Certificate examination for 2008.
Last year 50,873 students sat the Leaving Certificate, 3,021 students sat exams as part of the Leaving Certificate Applied Programme and 57,287 students sat the Junior Certificate in 89 curricular and 15 non-curricular examination subjects |
