Preliminary figures just released by the Gardaí indicate that there were more than 400 arrests for drink driving offences across the country during the Easter holiday period this year.

In total 405 people were arrested across the country for drink driving during the course of the weekend, a decrease of 36 compared to the same period in 2007 when a total of 441 people were arrested for the same reason.

The arrests took place between Good Friday and Easter Monday and were carried out at Garda checkpoints across the country. Considerable resources were put into the operation targeting drink drivers with many Gardaí working overtime during the Easter weekend.

The same figures also indicate that nationwide there were 464 arrests for drink driving in a four day period leading up to St Patrick’s Day. There were only two road fatalities across both the St Patrick’s and Easter periods compared to 11 deaths for the same periods in 2007.
