SIPTU workers at the Conoco Phillips oil storage facility in Bantry Bay began a 48 hour work stoppage at the facility yesterday morning (Wednesday, June 11). The action arose from an issue regarding an Annualised Hours Agreement implemented in 2004. SIPTU branch organiser Eddie Mullins said that while this contract had worked to some satisfaction for two years, the company had subsequently withdrew from the agreement which has had a number of implications for workers. One of the issues concerning workers regards the amount of time off workers are given in lieu of unsocial hours. He said that workers had put a number of issues to the Labour Court who had come back with a recommendation that the company had accepted, but, the workers rejected. Mr Mullins said that workers want to now find a reasonable solution from the company and that workers were available to enter into discussions. A spokesperson for ConocoPhillips Bantry Bay Terminals said that operations at Bantry Bay remain uninterrupted, despite the two day withdrawal of labour by members of SIPTU. The spokesperson said that subsequent efforts to resolve matters through facilitation have so far been unsuccessful and that ConocoPhillips Bantry Bay remains available for dialogue with SIPTU. |
