Cork-based Fine Gael TD Bernard Allen has been named as the new Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, one of the most senior positions in the Dáil.

The Cork North Central Deputy had been hotly tipped for the post following Enda Kenny’s reshuffle of his front bench which saw Deputy Allen lose his position as Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs. Speaking to the Cork Independent, a delighted Deputy Allen said, “This is a very responsible position heading up the most powerful committee in the Dáil. It’s especially important at a time of such huge government waste and it’s my responsibility to hold them to account”.

Deputy Allen said that he would be targeting the runaway expenditure in health care in particular and would make delivering value for money for the taxpayer in all areas his top priority.

He added, “I look forward to working with the Comptroller and Auditor General on these issues. I have been studying his most recent report which details numerous examples of huge wastage of public money. On my watch ministers and their departments will have to take full account of how they spend public money”.

As well as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee Deputy Allen was also appointed as a member of the Committee of Health and Family Affairs.
