The campaign against a proposed new dam scheme in Bantry in West Cork is set to continue following a court hearing in Cork Circuit Court recently.

The anti-dam campaigners have also taken their case to the European Parliament with the support of Munster MEP Kathy Sinnott who has called the proposals “dangerous and unnecessary”.

Timothy and Brian Harrington travelled to Brussels recently to present their petition to the European Parliament Petitions Committee opposing the dam with Ms Sinnott’s support. It is theor contention that the dam is proposed to facilitate overdevelopment in the Bantry area though some locals who have spoken to the Cork Independent argue that that would be of benefit to the town.

Ms Sinnott who is vice president of the Petitions Committee said, “Ireland has a history of project splitting, splitting infrastructure projects like this into smaller projects and therefore avoiding the need for an EIA, which is happening in this case. The extraction of the clay alone should warrant an EIA.”

She added, “This proposed dam is both dangerous and unnecessary for Bantry and as vice president of the Petitions Committee I will ensure that we do everything possible to protect the people of Bantry from this risky project”.
