A major international barbershop singing competition will be held in Cork next month when the 19th Convention of the Irish Association of Barbershop Singers (IABS) takes place on October 5 and 6 in City Hall and the Clarion Hotel.

Groups from all over Ireland and Europe are set to take part as well as the Metropolis quartet from California, winners of the American championship for male quartets who will be guests of honour at a gala concert on Saturday October 6.

More than 30 groups will perform at the event and there will be barbershop workshops and free public performances on the streets of Cork. Also planned for the weekend are church performances at masses in the South Parish Church, Holy Trinity Church, St Peter's and Paul's Church and St Augustine's.
