Animals performing at circuses visiting Cork could soon be a thing of the past if Socialist city councillor Mick Barry has his way.
The northside councillor is seeking support from council colleagues for a Motion he is to putting before City Council to “ban circuses that use wild animals from holding shows in the city”. Cllr Barry’s Motion is similar to one presented to Fingal Council in Dublin by his party colleague Clare Daly. In the Fingal case the motion was passed unanimously making Fingal the first local authority in the country to ban the use of animals in circus performances in its jurisdiction.
Speaking to the Cork Independent Cllr Barry said, “To bring a wild animal to a circus in this city, the animal has to be caged and transported long distances. In the circus ring you see whips but when the animals are being trained more vicious methods are sometimes used. “The humiliation of animals for the pleasure of the public and the profits of the circus should have no place in the 21st century and does not serve as a good education for children in learning respect for nature and wildlife”. He added that momentum is now against the use of wild animals in circuses and said he would be pushing, along with his party colleagues for an outright ban across the country.
Cllr Barry’s Motion calls for “The immediate introduction of by-laws or other measures to prohibit circuses which use wild animals from performing on any land within its jurisdiction”. |
