An application to Cork City Council for the development of apartment buildings on a 1.5 acre green area in Bishopstown is expected to provoke an angry response from local residents.

The developer, Ken Mahon, submitted his plans to the City Council for the development of 22-unit apartment buildings, which will vary in height from two to three storeys on the Bishopscourt Green. The latest application follows on from an earlier rejection in January when planners refused permission for a residential application of four houses. The refusal was based on zoning issues and the possible negative impact on surrounding areas.

Speaking to the Cork Independent, Mick Murphy of the Communities for Sustainable Development said, "The weak wording contained in the City Development Plan 2004-09 is the reason that we have applications such as this which proposes to build on one of the few remaining green areas in Bishopstown.

"Another example of this inappropriate and unsustainable type development on Amenity / Sports grounds can be found in An Bord Pleanalas decision to rezone sports pitches on the Tank Field against the wishes of residents of the area, the elected Councillors who voted against rezoning twice and Cork city planners who refused permission as it went against the City Development Plan. "We in CSD are calling yet again to have Bishopstown Green and the trees on same protected as allowed under the Planning and Development Act so that maximum protection will be afforded to this vital green area."
