Proposals to site a new tall building in the Blackpool area of Cork have been cut down by members of the city council.

Discussing the council's Draft Tall Buildings Policy document this week, councillors agreed to accept the plan with the exception of a 16-20 storey tower proposed for the north of Blackpool at the Commons Road.

The policy identifies several areas of the city which planners believe are suitable for tall buildings. The areas included were the Docklands, both north and south, Mahon, near Mahon Point, the area around City Hall and the Commons Road area of Blackpool.

While substantially accepting the plan, many councillors objected to the Blackpool location proposed for the Commons Road almost opposite Fairfield Avenue. Local councillors including Catherine Clancy (Lab), Damien Wallace (FF) and Joe O'Callaghan (FG) all objected to the location.

City Manager Joe Gavin said the site for the proposed Blackpool tall building was chosen in the same way as all the others in the city but could be removed from the policy if councillors so wished.

Green councillor Chris O'Leary said he was concerned with the environmental sustainability of high buildings in Cork and added that he could not see the need for more office space in Blackpool which he said contained a large number of vacant offices already.
