Members of the Parents for Justice pressure group were celebrating a major breakthrough this week in their long campaign for information regarding the organ retention scandal of the 70s and 80s.

The High Court has ordered Holles Street Hospital in Dublin to release documents into the public domain regarding organ retention practices following a Freedom of Information (FOI) request by Parents for Justice. The hospital had originally refused to release the documents to Parents for Justice following the request.

The group is now in possession of the documents and will host a public open day at McKeever House, 4/5 Ushers Court, Ushers Quay, Dublin on Saturday, October 13 between 2pm and 5.30pm. The order for the High Court is likely to influence the decision of hospitals around the country who are in possession of similar documentation which families of deceased who had organs retained without permission are likely to want to see.

Cork based campaigner Donal Murphy told the Cork Independent, “This is very good news. At last we have had some success with the High Court putting pressure on Holles Street to release the documents. This means a lot for parents in Cork and around the country. It means that at last something is being done. Most hospitals involved will need to reassess their positions now because there has been a High Court ruling”.
