Breastcheck Unit makes contact with Cork women E-mail

Woman previously told they must wait until 2010  for a mammogram can now expect to see their time on the waiting list greatly reduced following the opening of a BreastCheck Unit in the Southern Region.

The free national programme opened at the South Infirmary-Victoria University Hospital on Tuesday, December 4, with eligible women in the Douglas area the first to be contacted for screening.

The programme, which invites women aged between 50 and 64 for a free breast x-ray every two years, has been widely welcomed following protracted delays in establishing the service after initially being promised over five years ago.

Gerard O’Callaghan, Chief Executive at the South Infirmary-Victoria University Hospital says the opening is good news for those already awaiting mammograms. “We are delighted that the South Infirmary-Victoria University Hospital was chosen as the host site for BreastCheck. This should ensure that the numbers of women waiting on our routine waiting list should be greatly reduced, and thus should not have to wait as long for a routine mammogram.”

BreastCheck says the service will be extended to all eligible women across Cork over time, with a programme in Galway due to open next week. They have also promised the introduction of mobile units in individual counties following the initial screening period.

Labour TD Kathleen Lynch welcomed the opening of the service in Cork, but expressed surprise at the lack of publicity. “Myself and a group of women have campaigned to get the service for the Southern Region for some time now, but we’re very grateful that it has finally opened after five years and three months.

“I am surprised however at the lack of publicity generated on the services part. Aside from the media, there has been very little said. BreastCheck is the premier service and have never been involved in the recent scandal. With the provision of this vital service in Cork I believe we will see waiting lists reduced dramatically.”
