Plans for the final piece of Cork’s motorway ring-road were unveiled to the public at a meeting at the Kingsley Hotel this week.

The Cork Regional Roads Design Office (CRDO) and National Roads Authority (NRA) have proposed that the road which will link the Killarney Road and the Mallow Road to the northwest of the city include a new €500 million high-level bridge. The bridge will take the road across the Lee Valley near the Anglers Rest pub and on up to Clogheen. The proposal chosen will not directly impact on Kerry Pike village but will pass some way east of the village built up area.

Despite the fact that the route avoids the most populated areas opposition to the project is expected to be strong. The Save the Lee Valley Group who have launched a website (www.savetheleevalley.net) and petition against the road are opposed to any motorway going through the Lee Valley. Local politicians have react ed with caution to the route with many saying that environmental considerations must be paramount. Despite this, many commuters and local motorists as well as residents of the northwest part of Cork city are likely to welcome the road whatever form it takes. Currently there is no effective bypass on the northwest side of the city with heavy traffic volumes forced down narrow country lanes and city streets.

The route chosen is both the shortest and cheapest of the options proposed and runs from the Poulavone Roundabout near Ballincollig to Rathpeacon. The NRA say the route affects the least number of houses and has the least noise and vibration impact on a lower number of existing dwellings.
