Cork East TD, David Stanton is calling for an ambulance to be based in Cobh. The Fine Gael TD said that as it stands, Cobh is the only large town in east Cork which does not have an ambulance based there and that given the location of Cobh and the fact that it is not as easily accessible as other areas means that an ambulance must be based in the town. "Recent figures supplied to me by the Health Service Executive show that the National Ambulance Service responded to more than 550 emergency calls last year, which is over 1.5 medical emergencies per day. In total, there were 309 Emergency Ambulance Calls and 250 Doctor Urgent Calls. In addition to the emergency calls, there were also 22 calls to transport patients. "Given the large number of medical emergencies where ambulances were required and the recent population growth in the Cobh and Great Island area, which now totals 12887 people, I feel that an ambulance should be permanently based in the Cobh area," he said. Concluding he added, "having a local ambulance, will mean quicker response times to emergencies, enabling people to get to hospital faster and receive what could be life saving treatment." |
