The Cork footballers and hurlers returned to training this week following the appointment of Conor Counihan as manager of the Cork senior football team.
The 96-day dispute ended on Monday night when county board delegates voted to remove football boss Teddy Holland and his selectors by a majority of 89-19, following arbitration terms drawn up by Labour Relations Commission official Kieran Mulvey. Former All-Ireland winning defender and All-Star Counihan was appointed by a new committee made up of five county board members and two players, Derek Kavanagh and Nicholas Murphy. Counihan’s first task will be to appoint his selectors with Terry O’Neill and Jim Nolan among the early favourites. The dispute, which saw inter-county fixtures go unfulfilled due to a strike for the first time in the GAA’s history, has resulted in Cork forfeiting the Allianz National League points to the opponents they failed to meet in the first two rounds of the Leagues. Cork’s footballers were due to play Meath and Dublin in the NFL, while Kilkenny and Waterford were scheduled to meet the hurlers. Kilkenny, however, yesterday offered Cork a re-fixture for this coming Sunday at a venue in either of the two counties rather than claiming the two points they were granted following the CCCC decision. It was unconfirmed at the time of going to press whether Cork would accept the offer, although it seemed unlikely to happen given the GAA confirmed their decision still stands. Cork were also fined €400 per unfulfilled fixture. |
