The Cork Better Building Awards 2008 were officially launched this week by the Cork Marketing Partnership, with businesses now being invited to submit their forms before the closing date for entries on Friday, June 20.

Now in its eighth year, the award sees a number of new initiatives introduced this year, including a 'Tourism Category' as well as the 'Cork Celebrity Choice', which invite well known Corkonians to nominate their favorite Cork building, with explanations of why the particular building appeals to them.

It will join the existing and hotly contested categories such as 'Retail Front', 'Pub Front, Café/Restaurant Front', 'Commercial Business Front, 'New Development', 'Tourism Category' and 'Heritage/Conservation Project'.

Every building in the City Centre is eligible to enter, with Tourism facilities in the greater Cork area also invited to enter. Chairman of Cork Marketing Partnership, Michael Geary said, "This is an opportunity to applaud the joint effort that goes into creating and maintaining the range of wonderful buildings in Cork City Centre.

"The Awards seek to congratulate staff, managers, property owners, developers, architects and designers for high standards in design, conservation, and creativity and salute the window cleaners, painters and maintenance staff on their good practice in the presentation and upkeep of Cork City's buildings," he added.

Previous Cork Better Building Award winners include the Cork School of Music, Boqueria, Scoozis, Kent Station, Crawford Observatory, Beamish & Crawford, St Johns College, Household Linens and the Classic Bar. Commenting on the impact of the Cork Better Building Awards, Liz McAvoy, Programme Manager at Cork Marketing Partnership, said, "The most positive outcome of the Cork Better Building Awards is that previous winners continue to maintain the high standards that has gained them recognition in previous years and this is ultimately the aim behind the awards".

Entry forms will be distributed to all City Centre businesses in the coming days. Information is also available on www.cometocork.com. Adjudication will take place in July 2008 and entrants will be invited to attend the annual Gala Breakfast Awards Ceremony in the autumn where the winners will be announced and feted by the Lord Mayor and the Cork business community.
