No less than seven Corkonians were winners in the 2007 Social Entrepreneurs Ireland (SEI) Awards which took place in Dublin recently. The seven Cork winner will now meet Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Donal Counihan in the Lord Mayor’s Chambers this coming Monday.
The awards give one (level one) or two (level two) years support in both financial and practical terms to the winners in their projects. John McCarthy, Bob Seward, Carol Doyle, Evelyn Grantand Tania Zhinzhina, all from Cork City, Jose Ospina from West Cork and Louise Oppermann from Glounthane, each received an award in recognition of their outstanding work in the community. The winners were recognised at a ceremony in Dublin where speaking at the event, Denis O’Brien said, “Social Entrepreneurs are the mavericks and free thinkers who tackle some of the biggest issues facing Ireland today. In doing so, they benefit not just the community and voluntary sector but society as a whole”.
Commenting, Level 2 winner John McCarthy told the Cork Independent, “It’s great for everyone who is recognised to get the moral, practical and financial support SEI provides. As the organisation’s motto puts it ‘people who dare to think they can change the world are the ones that do’, and I think that sums up the whole ethos of the SEI”. |
