Oscar winning directors the Coen Brothers will once again provide the opening gala for the Corona Cork Film Festival with Burn After Reading, their latest movie starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

Ethan and Joel Coen's latest follows on from their recent Oscar winning success, No Country For Old Men, in opening the week long celebration of cinema, and although the brothers won't be present, there are many other stars from the world of film confirmed to appear during the course of the festival.

Paul Merton, British comedian and Have I Got News for You panellist will be in Cork to present Silent Clowns, as will the renowned British artist and filmmaker Peter Greenaway, who's movie credits include The Cook, the Thief, his Wife & her Lover.

Now in its 53rd year, the festival continues to go from strength to strength and has attained a sterling reputation as both a showcase of Irish and international talent, particularly in the medium of short film. This years event will again bring together a collection of feature films, appearing on Irish screens for the first time alongside an eclectic range of documentaries, experimental works, discussions and sidebar events.

This year's slow food festival market returns bigger and better than previous years with over 30 local producers lining the pavements of Patrick's Street to coincide with the Slow Food Screening programme.

Budding filmmakers, junior cinephiles and critics-to-be will find plenty to amuse, delight and enthrall at 'Through the Looking Glass', a youth programme with a rich selection of feature films, documentaries, shorts and animation made for and about young people. The Family Programme is a new element to the festival and will feature a series of screenings designed to suit all the family, from classics to international shorts, rare animation to fun 3D.

The Corona Cork Film Festival begins on Sunday, October 12 and continues until Sunday, October 19.
