A host of international movie, music and sports stars will be walking down the red carpet in Cork this week when the World Premier of award-winning Irish film Strength And Honour takes place at the Opera House.

Stars of the movie Michael Madsen, Vinnie Jones, Richard Chamberlain, Patrick Bergin and Pat Shortt will be joined by British music acts Ocean Colour Scene and Natasha Bedingfield at the Gala Black Tie Event on Monday, November 19.

The movie, which was written, directed and produced by Rochestown native Mark Mahon, was shot on location in Cork. It tells the story of an Irish American boxer (Madsen) who must return to the ring, after accidentally killing his friend, in order to raise money for surgery to save his dying son.

The movie has already garnered a number of awards and accolades including ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Actor’ at the Boston Film Festival, the first time in the history of the Festival that both awards have gone to the same movie.

Writer and Director Mark Mahon is returning from LA, where he’s currently in negotiations for his next movie, Freedom Within The Heart, with Leonardo DiCaprio rumoured to be taking on the lead role of Brain Boru. The Cork director says that while nothing is 100% confirmed as yet, negation’s are going well  and he is very hopeful of bringing DiCaprio to Cork to shoot the movie.

Meanwhile, Mahon is hoping that Cork people show up in huge numbers to make the Strength And Honour premier a very a special night. “We want this to be the biggest film premiere in the history of Cork. We have a huge array of talent coming in and we want to extend a warm Cork welcome to all our guests. We want to make this a night to remember, with a huge crowd outside the Opera House.”

Proceeds from the sold-out charity premiere will go to Marymount Hospice. Strength And Honour goes on general release across Ireland on Friday, November 30.
