Bantry Bay Seafoods in West Cork is facing into its second food safety issue in two years following a warning from the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that consumers should not eat eating “certain frozen cooked mussel products made by Bantry Bay Seafoods, imported from Ireland”.

The warning comes following two alleged food poisoning incidents in Washington State in the northwest of the USA which the FDA say may have been caused by azaspiracid toxins in seafood products. Azaspiracid toxins occur naturally and can cause nausea when eaten.

It is the second time in two years that the company has been hit by a food scare. In April last year products were removed from sale in France and also from Aldi stores in Ireland following alleged contamination which is still being investigated by the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA).

The SFPA have written to the American authorities stating that the batch in question came from waters that had been tested as clean and that there could not be sufficient concentrations of the toxins to cause illness in consumers. They have stated that the facts as presented to them do not justify a recall of the products.
