Internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Spencer Tunick, legendary rock acts The Fall and Faust, and an indoor techno-park in the Cork Docklands were just some of the highlights announced at yesterday's (Wednesday, May 14) programme launch for the 2008 Cork Midsummer Festival.

The expansive arts programme, the festivals largest to date, was launched in typically lavish style at the Bodega, Cornmarket Street. Dubbed by organisers as "a festival for the senses", the Cork Midsummer Festival is set to feature a host of gigs, performances and exhibitions over 21 days from Sunday, June 15 until Saturday, July 5.

The festival will see the return of the Spiegeltent to Emmet's Place, as well as the ever popular Lord Mayor's Picnic in the Park. The festival will also branch out to Youghal for the first time, with the eco-funfair Sensazione, while Cork's-own acclaimed production company Corcadorca will once again play their part in the festivities with the staging of their highly anticipated version of Eugene O'Neill's The Hairy Ape.

Home-grown talent is set to play a significant part over the course of the three weeks, with the Cork Midsummer Festival producing the premiere of The Magic Tree, before it goes to the Edinburgh Festival. The festival is also commissioning Hammergrin's K: The Iwoa Project, a homage to Philip K Dick.

Speaking to the Cork Independent, Festival Director William Galinsky expressed his excitement with the programme, which, he believes, "promises something for everybody", while also paying tribute to everyone who has made the success of the festival possible. "We've had some really great support, without whom this programme wouldn't be possible. Thankfully we have a good relationship with the council, local businesses and hotels, who have really supported us and we hope this festival will benefit them. This years programme is our largest to date and we have made every effort to ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy. People crave a live experience and this festival will provide that as well as creating a sense of magic and fun for all."
