A Cork abuse victim is to take a case to the European Court of Human Rights to ensure the safety of children in schools in the future. Louise O'Keeffe , who was abused by her teacher as a child, this week lodged papers with the court seeking to have the Irish State found responsible for the abuse she experienced at school. The Dunmanway mother suffered abuse at the hands of her school principal Leo Hickey in the 1970s when she was a pupil at Dunderrow National School.

The move comes just months after a decision by the Supreme Court that the State was not legally liable for the abuse that she suffered.

Hundreds of other compensation claims involving children who allege they were abused in day schools rested on this case.

Ms O'Keeffe said that she hopes that the case will "give others the courage" to come forward to seek justice.
