Thirty three-year-old Timothy John Cunningham from Farran, just west of Cork city was charged yesterday at Cork Circuit Court on two counts of money laundering in connection with the Northern Bank Robbery in Belfast in September 2004.

It is alleged that Mr Cunningham had in his possession more than £3 million at an address at Churchview, Farran, County Cork that was part of the proceeds of the audacious 2004 robbery.

He is charged with transferring £200,000 on January 21 2005 that he allegedly knew be money from the robbery.

He is also charged with possession of £3,010,380 between December 20 2004 and February 16 2005 which it is alleged he knew was from the proceeds of the Northern Bank robbery.

The Northern Bank robbery was one of the largest bank robberies ever committed in the British Isles. The raid was carried out at the Northern Bank’s headquarters in Donegal Square, Belfast in December 2004. The raiders escaped with more than £26 million. The raid also led to political tensions in Northern Ireland when the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) along with the British and Irish governments claimed that the IRA were involved in the robbery, a claim that that has always been denied by the IRA and Sinn Féin.

Mr Cunningham has been remanded on bail to appear before the court again next Wednesday.

Mr Cunningham was released on his own bond of E50,000 and an independent surety of E8,000.
