Cork City Council made more than €3 million from the collection of on street parking fees in 2007 according to figures produced by city officials this week.

The total revenue from parking charges in the city in 2007 was €3,282,732 comprising of €3,189,831 from the sale of parking disks and €92,901 from the Park by Phone scheme. Despite the huge revenue generated, the total was actually lees than that collected in 2006 when €3,355,764 was collected in on street parking fees, €3,305,133 from parking discs and €50,631 through Park by Phone.

The figures were released in response to a question put to the City Manager by Fianna Fáil councillor Tom O'Driscoll. Speaking at a meeting of councillors in City hall earlier this week, Cllr O'Driscoll questioned why there had been an €73,000 reduction in the amount collected between 2006 and 2007.

City Manager Joe Gavin said that there were now less on street spaces available due to the construction of green routes and the redevelopment of major streets such as Patrick Street and Oliver Plunkett Street. He also said that usage at the Kinsale Road Park and Ride was increasing as was use of multi-storey car parks which he said could probably account fro the decrease in revenue from on street parking.
