Future expansion of Mahon Point Shopping Centre will be very limited if a new Retail Plan proposed by Cork city and county councils comes into being.

The Proposed Joint retail Strategy 2008, the first draft of which has been sent out to councillors for consultation envisages that Mahon Point Shopping Centre could only see "limited expansion of up to 10 per cent considered for urban design reasons".

The strategy says that Mahon Point is by far the largest shopping centre in Cork at 14,000 square metres and should remain "generally at this level over the lifetime of the strategy" which will run until 2020.

If adopted, the strategy will effectively prevent the further expansion of Mahon Point Shopping Centre to any significant extent.

Speaking to the Cork Independent, a spokesperson for O'Callaghan Properties who own Mahon Point said, "Having not yet seen the document we can't comment directly on this matter. However, we can confirm that there are currently no plans to extend Mahon Point Shopping Centre".
