Cork City Council has advertised for tenders to construct the city’s biggest skate park to be located at the Mardyke.
It is the second time that the local authority has advertised seeking tenders to build the €300,000 facility following a tender process last year when the council was not satisfied with any of the four tenders it received.
A smaller skate park was developed at Tory Top Park in Ballyphehane as an interim solution but large numbers of skateboard enthusiasts continue to practice their hobby in the city centre, particularly on Emmet Place outside the Opera House and Crawford Gallery, a practice the council does not want to see continue.
The proposed Mardyke facility will be the biggest facility of its type in Cork when built and will consist of concrete ramps, bowls and pipes. It is proposed that access to the facility will be controlled to prevent anti-social behaviour and it is hoped to have a contractor in pace by the end of February and open the facility this summer.
City manager Joe Gavin has previously indicated he would be in favour of bye-laws being introduced in the city centre to prevent skateboarding but only when satisfactory alternative facilities are available in the city.
