Fianna Fáil Councillors are rumoured to have withdrawn their support for Minister Michael Martin at a recent branch meeting.

Councillors attending the meeting of the South East Cumann on Friday night were said to have shown a vote of no support for the Minister for Foreign Affairs, in the wake of last weeks budget.

A number of controversial budget measures have thrown the party into chaos over the past week with some Fianna Fáil members publicly stating their opposition to plans to abolish the automatic rights to a medical card for the over 70s.

Tuesday´s u-turn on the medical card issue has failed to quell the growing unease within the party, with some local councillors claiming this week that they would be the ones to inevitably suffer when their time comes to canvas for the local elections.

Politician´s aggrieved by the governments heavy-handed budgetary measures in the run up to the local elections is thought to have contributed to the no-show of hands for supporting Minster Martin at Friday´s Cumann meeting. Fianna Fáil TD Michael McGrath is now believed to have the backing of the councillors in the area.
A spokesperson for Minister Martin dismissed the rumours saying he had the full support of the party.
