The Minister for Finance Brian Cowen made a commitment yesterday that the long-awaited Cork to Midleton commuter rail line would be ready for service in 2009.

Speaking during yesterday’s Budget 2008 announcement the Minister said that key projects such as the East Cork rail-line were through planning and that the year ahead would see them readied for service in 2009. On that note, Minister Cowen advised that €1 billion would be invested in the public transport system.

East Cork Sinn Féin Councillor Martin Hallinan welcomed the announcement. “This is definitely good news for East Cork and while it is behind time, it must be welcomed,” he said. Cllr Hallinan added that he would now be calling for the line to be extended to Youghal to also benefit people living in this area.

This sentiment was echoed by Fine Gael Councillor Barbara Murray who said that while she welcomed the announcement, she had to add that she hoped the Minister would stand by his word. “I would really like to think that the line will be ready by 2009 , but, the bottom line is we’ve already had three delays to the opening of this line.”

The Finance Minister also advised he would invest a further €1.7 billion in the National roads network and that the 37km of dual carriageway will open between Mitchelstown and Cashel during the year.
