On the eve of the publication of the Pre-Budget Outlook, politicians from across all parties in Cork pledged that they will continue efforts to ensure that the Government commits to the South Docklands project by setting aside funding for the major development.
Currently there has been no financial commitment from the Government towards the plan which requires in the region of half a billion euro in state funding for infrastructure, including three new bridges across the Lee. Fine Gael’s Dino Cregan said that all parties should join forces and lobby everyone they could to gain support for funding, because without it “we are going nowhere”. Cllr Cregan’s call was echoed by Fianna Fáil’s Cllr Damien Wallace, Chairman of the Dockland’s Policy Committee who said that central funding was an integral part of the plan and he was hopeful that not only would their application for infrastructural funding be successful but, that financial incentives such as tax breaks would also be made available to stimulate development. Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil Minister of State, Deputy Billy Kelleher said that realising the massive investment needed for the project, he will do anything he can to push the project forward while Labour TD Ciarán Lynch said that every effort from both national and local representatives would have to be put behind moving the project ahead and he will play his part in this.
Fine Gael TD Bernard Allen also pledged to continue efforts to ensure funding is set aside for the project and said that he will not only lobby for a commitment to the Docklands but, for funding to rejuvenate older parts of the city such as Shandon. |
