Residents in the Blarney street area of Cork city are demanding urgent action from Cork City council to tackle the dramatic number of serious road accidents that are occurring in the area.

Last weekend separate accidents resulted in three cars being written off in the area, with one unfortunate resident seeing his car written off for an incredible third time in an 18-month period. According to Tom Coleman, the Chairman of the Blarney Street residents Association the problem has got so bad that residents are being force to park their cars illegally on the pavement for fear they will otherwise be seriously damaged or worse.

Local Fine Gael councillor Patricia Gosch has put a motion to Cork City Council demanding the urgent implementation of a traffic plan for the area. Cllr Gosch said "This problem is getting out of hand and residents simply can't park their cars in safety. It is a very serious matter that demands urgent attention".

According to Tom Coleman the Community Association have been demanding that a traffic plan be put in place for nearly 20 years.

Mr Coleman said, "In the past year and a half there have been 14 cars written off in Blarney Street due to accidents. There has been too much development in the area without proper provision for parking and traffic calming. We simply can't take this any more and something needs to be done."

The issue is due to be discussed at the next meeting of the Roads Committee of Cork City Council on Monday, April 14. Mr Coleman said that local residents want to see speed bumps installed as soon as possible as well as proper parking areas and cameras to monitor speeding in the area. He also said that there was widespread support to make Blarney Street one way.
