At least €900 million in government funding over 20 years will be required to make the proposed redevelopment of Cork's Docklands a success according to City Manager Joe Gavin.

The massive injection of funding would be needed to provided new bridges, public transport infrastructure, roads and clean-ups of contaminated sites. Initial proposals for the city's docks include the provision of at least two new bridges across the River Lee the relocation of the city's docks to Ringaskiddy in Cork Harbour.

Cork City Council has also commissioned a consultant's report to look at the future of public transport in the city which will look at the feasibility of light-rail for the southern capital.

Many local politicians had been pushing for tax breaks in the last budget to help kick-start the Docklands plan but none was forthcoming. The Council does however expect decisions on funding applications for a new bridge across the Lee in February.
