A number of significant proposals for the Cork Docklands Development are expected over the coming weeks following the adoption of a Local Area Plan at Monday night’s Council meeting.

The South Docks Local Area Plan (LAP) will provide the ‘blueprint’ for the development of a ‘five-minute-city’, purported to be ‘the size of Kilkenny’, in the Cork docklands.

Cork City Manager Joe Gavin, said at Monday’s council meeting, said that one single planning application, believed to be Howard Holdings, was expected within six weeks and would be worth between an estimated 1.5 and 2 billion. The landmark building is expected to be in excess of 30 stories and the planned development will also house the city’s first conference centre.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Damian Wallace, Chairman of the Docklands Policy Committee welcomed the adoption of the Local Area Plan for the Docklands at Monday night’s Council meeting.

“There have been very positive reports of developers, anxious to move projects forward, and I am aware of a major development that is expected in the planning system in the next few weeks. The plans for the Eastern Gateway bridge are also proceeding and the people of Cork can expect to see major changes in this area over the next few months and years.

“My Committee has put a lot of work into considering the submissions over the last few months. Once the plan is formally adopted on Monday night we can then begin to focus on driving forward the development agenda for the Docklands and providing the appropriate assistance to the key stakeholders to allow the project to move forward,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Cork City Council are awaiting a decision from the Department of Environment on their request for 60 million from the National Development Plan. A decision is expected within two weeks.
