SIPTU members at the Dunnes Stores branch in Ballyvolane have voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action.

More then 100 union members at the store were balloted following allegations of workplace bullying. The results yesterday evening, Wednesday, November 7, showed significant support for industrial action, which is now likely to take place in the form of  a 24-hour workplace stoppage in the run up to Christmas.

Siptu say they are now considering their options, and while industrial action is not yet a foregone conclusion, they have warned that it is a distinct possibility. The union claims that efforts to resolve the problem in a non-confrontational manner have, to date, proved unsuccessful. The next move by union members is likely to be an application for strike action.

Speaking to the Cork Independent, John Mullins, Siptu Sectorial Organiser, said, “The company hasn’t engaged with us. We’ve tried unsuccessfully to sit down and discuss the allegations of bullying by members of management, but the company won’t allow for a meeting. I’ve been dealing with them since April, and in that time we’ve raised a number of issues, but they don’t want to know.

“The overwhelming support of this ballot show just how frustrated people are feeling, but industrial action doesn’t have to take place. We are still open to discussing the matter and we are prepared to sit down. The workers don’t want to go on strike, particularly in the run up to Christmas. But if the company continues to refuse to deal with the issue, there may be no option but to take action in the form of a 24-hour stoppage.”

The store, which is one of the busiest branches in Cork operates a 24 hour supermarket during the weekend as well as a late night drapery section. Management at the Dunnes Stores head office and the Ballyvolane branch declined the opportunity to comment on the situation.
