A Delegation from the European Parliament Fisheries Committee is expected to meet with representatives from the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation in West Cork this morning (Thursday, March 20).

The meeting will provide fishermen from the South and West coasts with a forum to discuss the issues facing them both now and in the future.  Among the key issues which are expected to be discussed at this morning’s meeting are fishermen’s ongoing concerns about quota limits, the impact of rising fuel costs and the new guidelines on state aid to the fisheries sector.

Speaking about the delegation’s visit, Colm Burke MEP, who organised the delegation’s activities in Cork said,  “Irish coastal communities dependant on fisheries face particular hardship at this time as the fishing industry struggles to deal with the increasing number of restrictions it faces such as limited TACs and quotas, high fuel costs, decreasing fish stocks and the burden of a multitude of administrative obligations.”  He said that this is a timely opportunity for key players in the industry to discuss their concerns with Members of the European Parliament and that the issues which are raised at this morning’s meeting and over the course of the visit will be considered when the committee are producing new policy on such issues in the future.

This meeting is just one of a number of activities expected to be attended by the committee this week. Earlier this week the delegation visited Galway where they met with key stakeholders in the industry in the West of Ireland, last night on arrival in Cork they met with members of Cork County Council and after their meeting with the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation this morning they will visit the BIM Regional Training Centre.
