A Cork charity has launched an innovative new fundraising campaign aimed at helping people understand the importance of just one day in the fight against cancer.

The Every Day Counts campaign, launched by the Cork Cancer Research Centre (CCRC), gives people the chance to sponsor one day for €100 in 2008 to help fund the research being undertaken in Cork.

Dr Declan Soden, General Manager of the CCRC, believes that this initiative touches on one of the key aspects of the centre's work. "We're involved in Europe wide research programmes designed to improve the efficacy of current treatments, which means that the work we do here can be quickly brought to help patients currently going through treatment. Every day really does count in getting these improved treatments to cancer sufferers.

The CCRC was established in 1999 and since then has been bringing new Cancer Prevention and Treatment initiatives to the people of Cork and Munster.

The Centre has been at the forefront of advancing cancer prevention in Cork by initiating a screening programme for patients at high risk of developing colon cancer, which it is hoped will aid in the earlier detection and possible prevention of this cancer.

The research work carried out at the Centre since its inception has translated into three unique clinical studies, two focused on using less invasive surgery to treat inoperable cancers, and a third on the impact of diet and probiotic bacteria to reduce the risk of developing colon cancer.
