Cork City Council have denied claims from students that their grant payments are being delayed unnecessarily as the college term begins.

A number of students at UCC have complained that grants for students from the Cork city area are paid later than any others, well into October despite the fact that the academic year begins in September.

One mature student told the Cork Independent, “It seems ridiculous that students from Kerry or Dublin or wherever can get their grants in UCC well, before local students. It means that by the time we get our grants, as well as the hardship all the books for the course are gone by the time we get our money. It’s been going on for years and it’s ridiculous”.

A spokesperson for Cork City Council acknowledged that there had been a problem in the past but said that this year grants were paid in September.

“In the past all the grants were paid out at the same time. That meant that if people hadn’t filled in forms correctly or needed to provide more information, everybody had to wait until all that information was sorted out until they got their grants.

“This year though that system has been abandoned and grants have been paid ahead of schedule. From now on, once the forms are filled out correctly the application will be processed and paid. The only students who may experience a delay now will be those that haven’t properly completed applications or got them in on time,” the spokesperson said.
