Thirty-five acres of land purchased by Cork City Council in 2005 for the purpose of providing sports amenities is facing the possibility of becoming ‘redundant’ because of the National Road Authorities plans for the North Ring Road.

The City Manager Joe Gavin indicated at last Monday night’s Council meeting that usage of the site, located in Carrigrohane behind the Angler’s Rest pub, may have to be taken into reconsideration because of a proposed high-level bridge that forms part of the North Ring Road development.

Mr Gavin, speaking to the Cork Independent yesterday, said that the City Council had already withdrawn  their application for the provision of sports facilities at the site, despite the land having been purchased specifically for said purpose, although the City Manager also maintained that there remains some possibility of a development of sports pitches at the site pending the NRA’s plans.

“The City Council had no indication of the NRA’s plans for the North Ring Road at the time of the purchase of the Carrigrohane site,” said Mr Gavin. “As a result of the plans for the North Ring Road the City Council subsequently withdrew the application for the provision of sports grounds on the site.

“The site is a possible corridor at this moment, meaning  any potential plans for sports grounds cannot go ahead. However, we are hopeful that some sporting amenities can still be provided when work progresses on the North Ring Road.”

Any development will be dependent on the NRA’s proposals for the ring road. With the northern section of the road currently the only section to have been progressed, issues such as potential buffering zones around the Carrigrohane bridge could arise and realistically prevent any substantial sports ground development on the site.

The City Council could be left waiting, as Finbarr Burn’s of the NRA says they are currently awaiting news of the next stage of development. “The Northern section is, to date, the only section to have progressed, while there has been no commitment to date from the NRA with regards to the Western section. However, the City Council site is under a proposed high level bridge, which could go as much as 30 metres up and 30 metres down.

The North Ring Road Project is proposed to complete the ring of Cork City linking the N22 Ballincollig bypass to the N8 Glanmire bypass. The scheme will also connect the N20 Mallow/ Limerick to the ring road system.
