Thirty-five acres of land purchased by Cork City Council in 2005 for the purpose of providing sports amenities is facing the possibility of becoming ‘redundant’ because of the National Road Authorities plans for the North Ring Road.
The City Manager Joe Gavin indicated at last Monday night’s Council meeting that usage of the site, located in Carrigrohane behind the Angler’s Rest pub, may have to be taken into reconsideration because of a proposed high-level bridge that forms part of the North Ring Road development.
“The City Council had no indication of the NRA’s plans for the North Ring Road at the time of the purchase of the Carrigrohane site,” said Mr Gavin. “As a result of the plans for the North Ring Road the City Council subsequently withdrew the application for the provision of sports grounds on the site. “The site is a possible corridor at this moment, meaning any potential plans for sports grounds cannot go ahead. However, we are hopeful that some sporting amenities can still be provided when work progresses on the North Ring Road.”
Any development will be dependent on the NRA’s proposals for the ring road. With the northern section of the road currently the only section to have been progressed, issues such as potential buffering zones around the Carrigrohane bridge could arise and realistically prevent any substantial sports ground development on the site.
The North Ring Road Project is proposed to complete the ring of Cork City linking the N22 Ballincollig bypass to the N8 Glanmire bypass. The scheme will also connect the N20 Mallow/ Limerick to the ring road system. |
