The Health Service Executive was accused of “hurting patients” by slavishy imposing Government  health cuts at the Impact Cork Branch Annual General Meeting held last night ( Tuesday, February 12) in the Gresham Metropole Hotel.

Impact national secretary, Kevin Callinan said, “If the Government thinks health workers are annoyed about benchmarking, they should brace themselves  for a real wave of anger over staffing in hospitals and community health services”.

Impact currently represent over 4,000 health and local authority staff in the city.

In speaking about recent HSE policy, Callinan said , “This bizarre and unworkable new policy is hurting patients and service users, while placing intolerable burdens on workers. Posts are being suppressed even if they are within budget and approved as necessary by the HSE as recently as last Auttmn”.

Callinan continued to say, “ When the HSE was established  three years ago, many feared its main purpose was to deflect criticism from politicians. That’s exactly what’s happening now as the HSE implements job cuts that are damaging services from cancer care to suicide prevention”.

Impact described the HSE’S proposals for extended services hours as not viable due to the hundreds of posts which remain vacant as a result of what they called a ‘new HSE staff cuts policy’
