The Health Service Executive (HSE) will ask the High Court for a court order to allow it to give a blood transfusion to twins due to be born at the Cork University Hospital (CUH) this week.

Earlier this week, the HSE told Ms Justice Mary Laffoy that a mother attending the CUH, is refusing to allow her severely anaemic twins to receive blood transfusions when they are born because of religious reasons.

The HSE is planning to ask the High Court this morning (Thursday, April 24) for an order allowing it to give a "vital" blood transfusion to the babies after they are born, if the mother continues to object.

The HSE also says it believes that the babies are at risk and should be delivered by the weekend .It's believed the mother has no objections to being induced early.

It is understood that the woman, who is 32 weeks pregnant, is a member of the Jehovah's Witness Congregation.

The courts have granted a temporary order restraining the publication of the parents' names.
