Cork’s global legacy becomes the focal point of a new, five-year exhibition, which will show more then 650 portraits and biographies of influential Cork people from as far back as 1600 right up to the present day.

The exhibition, Inheritance – Honouring the Cork Legacy, which is being held at the Cork Vision Centre, will see more then one hundred portraits, specially painted by artist Kevin Sanques and accompanied by a biography that has been researched by Corporate Historian Kieran McCarthy, unveiled annually, before concluding in 2011.

The exhibition opened to the public yesterday, Wednesday, October 3, following a formal banquet at the Maryborough Hotel & Spa the previous day, Tuesday, October 2, where the flags of the world were flown in a symbolic gesture of further honour for the Cork people being honoured.

Cork Civic Trust’s John X Miller spoke of his delight over the exhibition. “It is difficult to put into words how important a project this is. It is truly different in that it sets out to celebrate and honour for the sake of giving recognition rather than seeking anything in return. The fact that the exhibition will feature part two in 2008, part three in 2009, part four in 2010 and its concluding part in 2011 will ensure that the people of Cork have an opportunity to propose people for inclusion in.

“Each of the invited guests have already received a fine art edition on their official invitations from the painting of Sir Francis Hincks who was Premier of Canada from 1807 – 1885 which is a beautiful and creative way of profiling Inheritance. I am delighted that we have so many Ambassadors attending the launch and exceptionally pleased that the Australian Ambassador to Ireland, Her Excellency Anne Plunkett will be present to unveil the portrait of the former Prime Minister of Australia John Curtin whose family came from Mallow.”

The exhibition will run until Saturday, October 27, 2007.
