Two of the country’s leading hospitals are to amalgamate and develop a new state-of-the-art public teaching hospital in Cork city.

Earlier this week, it was announced that the Mercy University Hospital (MUH) and South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH) are to join forces and develop a new hospital with  the potential to care for a catchment population of one million with an estimated 200,000-plus patients annually, drawn from Cork city, county and the province of Munster. It’s anticipated that this hospital will be a world-class centre of excellence for acute care and will be built on core specialties, worked by multi disciplinary teams and benchmarked against best international practice.

The decision to amalgamate and establish a new hospital arises from a long-standing, efficient collaboration between both institutions, across a range of specialties. Both hospitals wish to consolidate and expand their core specialisations and they recognise that this is impossible against the backdrop of inadequate hospital infrastructure, some of which dates back over 200 years.

In the coming weeks, both hospitals will  commence discussions with the Department of Health and Children, HSE, UCC and staff representatives to progress the decision. They will be interested in considering proposals from developers, aimed at identifying the most suitable site for the new hospital, with particular reference to ease of access, parking and public transportation issues. They will also be exploring various funding options with the various State agencies, along with co-funding initiatives with commercial developers.

Commenting on the announcement, Mercy University Hospital Chairman Mr Desmond C Murphy said that in taking this step , the hospitals are seeking to pool their resources to  the best advantage of all concerned. “Most of all we are seeking to articulate a new vision of health care complementarity, within which the very best can be taken from each sector to create a unified whole with one stamp above all, the stamp of excellence: excellence in planning, quality, availability, delivery, efficiency and above all, patient care,” he said.

South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital Vice-Chairman, Mr Dan Wallace added, “To provide excellent treatment, we must have modern wards, theatres, diagnostic, interventional and intensive care units, as well as top class nursing facilities. Neither hospital has the necessary infrastructure to provide “state-of-the-art” service, but what we do have is world class service capability, a health care ethos and commitment which is second to none and close links to University College Cork.”
