Property developer the Shipton Group have unveiled major plans for the redevelopment of the former Fermoy Marts site in the centre of the North Cork town to which will see a major mixed-use development built on the site. The ambitious plans drawn up by KOBW Architects, Arup Engineers and Brady Shipman Martin is described as an "imaginative first class scheme" for the site which Shipton purchased in 2007 from Cork Marts. Currently the company are holding a series of consultative meetings with various groups and associations in Fermoy seeking views, suggestions and comments on the emerging scheme. Clayton Love of the Shipton Group said that to date they had received an extraordinary welcome from all whom they had met in Fermoy and that once planning permission had been secured they looked forward to delivering "a really exciting high quality scheme for Fermoy". According to the company, the site did present some tough design issues, in particular the problem of flooding but they say that the proposed plan will deal with that issue successfully as well as traffic concerns and will also integrate well into the existing fabric of the town centre. The proposed scheme will see an investment of more than €100 million in Fermoy and will include 900 car parking spaces, a mix of shops and shop service units, offices, apartment houses and a seven-screen cinema. A planning application is expected by the end of February and construction could commence immediately if planning is granted and would take approximately 15 months to complete The Shipton Group has previously undertaken the major developments at Blackpool Shopping Centre and Retail Park and is currently working in a multi-million euro revamp of Douglas Village Shopping Centre. |
