All newborn babies born in Cork will soon be routinely vaccinated against TB.

According to a spokesperson for the Health Service Executive (HSE) South, plans to administer the vaccine to newborn infants at the Cork University Maternity Hospital are currently at an advanced planning stage and its anticipated that this service will be put in place over the coming weeks.

It had been anticipated that from October of last year, all newborns born in Cork would be routinely vaccinated against TB but, this plan was delayed because of shortages of the  BCG vaccine which came about because of difficulties experienced by its Danish manufacturer.

These difficulties have now been resolved and new stocks of the licensed vaccine are now available in Cork.

The vaccine is currently being delivered to all BCG sites and clinics are resuming vaccinations for the at risk groups,  to those who have requested the vaccine and to those who are on a waiting list for the vaccine. Parents of any baby who has not received BCG vaccine are also being advised that they will be contacted by their Local Health Office with an appointment to receive the vaccine at the earliest opportunity.

The BCG vaccine protects against Tuberculosis (TB) and is usually given to newborn babies, but can also be given to older children and adults who are considered to be at risk of developing TB.
