Representatives from the Cork Parents Support Group of the Diabetes Federation of Ireland met with Gerry O’ Dwyer Hospital Network Manager with the Health Service Executive (HSE) South last evening (Wednesday, October 31) to discuss their serious concerns about the paediatric diabetes service at Cork University Hospital (CUH).
The meeting followed a picket yesterday morning when more than 100 parents gathered outside the CUH to express their dissatisfaction with the services available to the 270 children attending CUH’s diabetic service.
According to the Health Service Executive, there are currently 1.2 whole time equivalent (wte) Clinical Nurse Specialists currently in post at the service. They say a further 0.5 wte post Acting Clinical Nurse Specialist was advertised and a suitable candidate has been identified and the process to recruit this person to this post is underway. At last evenings meeting, Gerry O’ Dwyer confirmed to parents that efforts to recruit a senior dietician for the paediatric diabetes service have been successful and a suitably qualified dietician commenced providing this service on October 30 who will work solely with these children. Speaking to the Cork Independent last night, spokesperson for the support group, Charlotte Pearson said that parents were hopeful this newly appointed senior dietician would actually work solely with these children. “At the meeting we were given promises, and I really hope that this new dietician will work solely with the children with diabetes, but, we’ll just have to wait and see.”
At the meeting the Hospital Network Manager also advised members of the Cork Parents Support Group to make contact with the relevant Advisory Committee whom they could lodge their requests and needs to in the future. |
