Concerned parents from Passage West will attend a public meeting in the town on Monday night to discuss their concerns about the government's failure to provide them with a new school. Parents of children attending the Star of the Sea primary school in the town have continued to campaign for the delivery of a new school which was promised to the town over ten years ago amid rising concerns about the impact of the current school accommodation is having on their children. According to campaigners the current accommodation is not sufficient to meet demands and there is no running water in seven of 12 classrooms, serious rot in some of the prefabs and the 'boys building' is a fire risk as outlined in Fire Officer's report. On Monday next, these campaigners will host a public meeting in the current school accommodation at 8pm. They have invited a number of local representatives to attend this meeting and to date, local representatives including Deputy Michael McGrath, Deputy Deirdre Clune, Deputy Simon Coveney, Deputy Ciaran Lynch and Dan Boyle have all accepted this invitation. One of the key issues which will undoubtedly be discussed at the meeting is the news that a design team has been appointed to commence planning for the new school project. At the weekend, local residents received a letter from Minister Micheal Martin confirming that the Education Minister had taken the decision to appoint a Design Team for the new school building project, a move which has been cautiously welcomed by campaigners. A spokesperson for the campaign said that while this was good news, it was just one step towards a new school and unfortunately a promise they had heard in the past. "We believe that this appointment is simply a placatory measure, as no time frame has been given. We intend to continue with our campaign until we receive the completion date," she said. Members of the public are being invited to attend next Monday's meeting and are advised that the school will be open from 7pm. |
