As pressure mounts on the Minister for Education Batt O’ Keeffe to restore funding for the schools buildings programme, one school in Cork has escalated its campaign to secure funding for the construction of a long-awaited new school building.
A number of local representatives have been invited to attend the meeting including the new Education Minister who has pledged to visit the school within the next month. The meeting comes as parents and campaigners continue to raise serious concerns about the impact the current school accommodation is having on children attending the Star of the Sea. They say the current accommodation is not sufficient to meet demands and that there is no running water in seven of 12 classrooms, the playing field is occupied by prefabs and there is no space for extra curricular activities such as book fairs and indoor PE as the school hall is being used as a classroom. Since the last public meeting, a team has been appointed to design the school, however, to date, an architect has still not even visited the site. While campaigners have cautiously welcomed this appointment they say that the move is just the first of nine stages in the development of the new school and that these stages can be stalled at any stage.
More than 200 people attended the last public meeting organised by campaigners and parents and local residents are being encouraged to also attend Monday night’s meeting which takes place at 8pm where local representatives will update them on the progress of the school and parents will be afforded the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session. |
