Cork poles are expected to march to the poles when elections for the Polish Parliament take place on Sunday, October 21.
All Polish people currently staying abroad are entitled to take part in the elections providing their registration was completed prior to Ireland there will be three places to vote, Cork, Dublin and Limerick. One can take part in the voting on the day of elections without previous registration if he/she has a certificate confirming his/her right to vote. Such a document is issued in Poland at the town hall of the place of residence. The voting will take place on one day from 6 am until 8pm. People voting abroad will be voting on the candidates from Warszawa - the constituency no 19. While the latest census says over 60,000 Poles are usually resident in Ireland, other estimates say the figure is at least double that. The high number of Poles now living in Ireland has not been lost on the those contesting the election, with Donald Tusk, leader of main opposition party, the pro-business Civic Platform, having already campaigned in Ireland. Their votes could be crucial in what is expected to be a close general election, with recent opinion polls indicating the PO to be running neck-and-neck with the Law and Justice Party (PiS), headed by current rime Minister Mr Kaczynski, who’s conservative coalition government collapsed. Mr Tusk hopes many of them will use the polling stations being set up in Cork, Dublin and Limerk to vote for his brand of liberal pro-business politics.
