Residents living in the Wilton area are being invited to attend a public meeting next week to discuss recent developments regarding the development of a private hospital on the grounds of the Cork University Hospital (CUH).

The meeting has been organised by the Laburnum Wilton Residents Association who are resolutely opposed to this proposed development which, if it goes ahead, will see the development of a 175 bed hospital with 8 CCU beds, 6 operating theatres, ambulatory surgery and full diagnostics on the grounds of the CUH.

Notifications of the meeting are being sent out to the 146 individuals who submitted observations to Cork City Council on the planning application from Beacon, including public representatives as well as residents living in the "island" area to the north of CUH broadly enclosed by CUH, Kenley, Model Farm Road and Wilton Road.

The meeting takes place in the Crypt at the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, Dennehy's Cross at 8.00pm next Tuesday (June 3).

The Beacon Medical Group (BMG) lodged an application for or a co-located hospital on the grounds of Cork University Hospital last January.

They say when fully operational the new hospital will directly employ over 511 staff with additional indirect employment of approximately 787 people.

BMG's application followed a policy direction from the Irish Government to the HSE to implement the Co-located Private Hospitals Project. The project was aimed at freeing up additional beds for public patients in public hospitals and the development of private hospital facilities on public hospital sites.

No public land is being sold to successful bidders. The hospitals will be privately operated hospitals for the provision of health care to public and private patients alike and not exclusive to private patients.
